August 1983

Neil is sent to New York by Smash Hits to interview The Police. By this time the Pet Shop Boys are obsessed by a stream of hi energy records made by New York producer Bobby Orlando, known as Bobby O’. “I thought well, if I’ve got to go and see The Police play then I’m also going to have lunch with Bobby O’ ”. Neil and Bobby O share a cheeseburger and carrot cake at a restaurant called The Apple Jack on August 19th (two years to the day since Neil and Chris met) and Bobby O’, flatered by Neil’s compliments, suggests making a record with the Pet Shop Boys.

The Pet Shop Boys make an early TV appearance on BBC’s Whistle Test (formerly The Old Grey Whistle Test).

1988

BPI awards U.K. triple-platinum album status to Actually.

2000

They perform at the Equality Rocks concert in Washington, D.C. As part of their set, Neil duets with Melissa Etheridge on ‘What Have I Done to Deserve This?’

2005

The Back to Mine compilation of various-artists tracks chosen by Chris and Neil is released.

2007

The Boys perform in Oslo, Norway.

2015

Neil and Chris attend this evening’s performance in London of the revival of Closer to Heaven. Also in attendance is comedian David Walliams, who poses with the Boys and the show’s cast members for a photo he then posts on Twitter.
