August 1983

Neil is sent to New York by Smash Hits to interview The Police. By this time the Pet Shop Boys are obsessed by a stream of hi energy records made by New York producer Bobby Orlando, known as Bobby O’. “I thought well, if I’ve got to go and see The Police play then I’m also going to have lunch with Bobby O’ ”. Neil and Bobby O share a cheeseburger and carrot cake at a restaurant called The Apple Jack on August 19th (two years to the day since Neil and Chris met) and Bobby O’, flatered by Neil’s compliments, suggests making a record with the Pet Shop Boys.

RIAA awards a U.S. gold album to Actually.

1990

Chris and Neil appear at a London bookstore to sign Chris Heath’s book Pet Shop Boys, Literally. The crowd becomes so unmanageable that police must break it up.

1991

Discography debuts on the U.S. album chart.

1994

They perform in San José, Costa Rica.

2011

They write a new song tentatively titled ‘The Opera,’ with Chris working on the music and Neil writing lyrics, after which he records a vocal. Later Neil phones Andrew Dawson in Los Angeles to discuss his co-producing their next album.

2012

Neil and Chris discuss plans for their upcoming tour with their manager Angela Becker. They also work on a new track, ‘Thursday Night Special,’ soon to be renamed just ‘Thursday.’
