We received a very interesting and thought-provoking email today regarding the new video for “Winner”:
“Thank You to the Boys for their Winner Video which so positively showed the Transgender Community who has been much maligned and battle worn for so long. Many in the Trans community have been buoyed and even moved to tears by the theme of the video. The transgender community has faced great sorrow and pain in our daily lives just trying to be accepted and ‘fit in” because we look different, many are forced to “Go Stealth” and disappear and hope no one ever finds out because being uncovered can mean the loss of family, friends, a job, a home, and even one’s life. Please pass along if you can, this anonymous ‘Thank You.’ to all involved in the production.”

Neil and Chris performed the song in the number one slot on “Top of the Pops” two days later. It went on to hit the top spot in Canada, the USA, Finland, Norway and New Zealand and was the first of four PSB UK number one singles. In 2020 The Guardian newspaper elected it the greatest UK Number One single of all time.

We are sad to hear that the distinguished British photographer Martin Parr, famous for his wryly distinctive images of everyday life, has died. In 2002 we asked him to direct the video for our song “London” and he made a short film which, in its combination of urban pathos and quirky London street life, was instantly recognisable as his work. We send our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Neil and Chris xx
