In 2004 we asked the composer Torsten Rasch to orchestrate our music for “Battleship Potemkin” after hearing his work, “Mein Herz brennt” (“My heart is on fire”), a cycle of songs inspired by the lyrics of the German rock band Rammstein. This work will be performed for the first time in the UK by the London Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday, May 31st, in the Royal Festival Hall, London. On this day 20 years ago, Pet Shop Boys premiered their new score to Eisenstein’s classic 1925 Russian silent film “Battleship Potemkin” in front of an estimated audience of 20,000 at London’s Trafalgar Square. PSB performed behind gauze with the Dresdner Sinfoniker conducted by Jonathan Stockhammer, playing orchestrations by Torsten Rasch while the movie is projected on a giant screen above the performers.
