Pet Shop Boys’ 1987 hit “Always On My Mind” has just been voted the best cover version ever by BBC Music listeners.
Earlier this month, BBC Music (which covers all BBC music radio channels) asked its listeners to choose their favourite song cover ever. A panel of radio presenters then cut down the list to 50 songs and invite the public to vote on their favourite. The results were announced this evening and the top five was:
5 Jeff Buckley — Hallelujah
4 Jimi Hendrix — All Along The Watchtower
3 The Stranglers — Walk On By
2 Johnny Cash — Hurt
1 Pet Shop Boys — Always On My Mind
Neil Tennant was interviewed live on The Simon Mayo Show on Radio 2 as the results were announced.
Thanks to everyone who voted! The full top 50 and more information about the poll can be found at the link below.
We are sad to hear that the distinguished British photographer Martin Parr, famous for his wryly distinctive images of everyday life, has died. In 2002 we asked him to direct the video for our song “London” and he made a short film which, in its combination of urban pathos and quirky London street life, was instantly recognisable as his work. We send our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Neil and Chris xx
