Beyond Theatre

Beyond Theatre

Last night at the Savoy Hotel in London, Pet Shop Boys and choreographer Javier De Frutos attended the Evening Standard Theatre Awards during which their ballet, “The Most Incredible Thing”, was presented with the “Beyond Theatre” award, recognising innovation. Accepting the award alongside Chris Lowe and Javier De Frutos, Neil Tennant thanked Emma Gladstone and Alistair Spalding of Sadler’s Wells for “nursing” the ballet through from original idea to production, dancer Ivan Putrov for suggesting that they write a ballet score, and playwright Matthew Dunster for helping to adapt the Hans Christian Andersen story on which the ballet is based. The award was introduced and presented by the artist and film director (and PSB collaborator) Sam Taylor-Wood who explained that the new “Beyond Theatre” award was for people who swap genres and break boundaries: “The art form that doesn’t change is in danger of stagnating.”

We are sad to hear that the distinguished British photographer Martin Parr, famous for his wryly distinctive images of everyday life, has died. In 2002 we asked him to direct the video for our song “London” and he made a short film which, in its combination of urban pathos and quirky London street life, was instantly recognisable as his work. We send our sincere condolences to his family and friends. Neil and Chris xx
